In May 2025, during the first class of our Cyberfair project course, our teacher asked us to brainstorm possible research topics. During the discussion, one of our classmates mentioned that during the Dragon Boat Festival holiday, he planned to go to Lukang Public Hall to line up for a local food called “Jian Dui.” This immediately aroused everyone’s curiosity. |
When people usually think about the Dragon Boat Festival, most would think of eating rice dumplings. However, this was the first time we had ever heard that people also eat Jian Dui during the festival. Therefore, we began to think:
Why do people in Lukang eat Jian Dui during the Dragon Boat Festival?
Is this custom unique to Lukang?
Does Jian Dui have any special cultural meaning?
With our teacher’s guidance, we discovered that eating Jian Dui during the Dragon Boat Festival is a unique folk custom in Lukang and holds important local cultural value. Therefore, we decided to choose “The Culture of Eating Jian Dui in Lukang during the Dragon Boat Festival” as our research topic for this year’s Cyberfair project.
