Lukang Public Assembly Hall

During the 2025 Dragon Boat Festival long weekend, we embarked on a special cultural documentation journey. Eating Jian Dui on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, the "Dragon Boat Festival," is a unique custom in Lukang. On the afternoon of the first day of the long weekend, we witnessed the grand occasion in front of the Public Assembly Hall with our own eyes.

At 4:30 PM, a long queue had already formed in front of the Public Assembly Hall, and the crowd never stopped. I watched the masters skillfully flip the oil woks, and golden Jian Dui were born amidst the aroma.

On the first day of the holiday, at 4:30 PM, we came to the Public Assembly Hall to receive Lukang Jian Dui. This was our first time seeing the scene of people queuing for Lukang Jian Dui on-site.

The most popular "Xishi Tongue" (Xishishe) flavor was snatched up in the blink of an eye, and the site immediately prepared for the second batch of production without stopping.

During the process of queuing for Jian Dui at the Public Assembly Hall, I saw the interaction between residents and tourists. That atmosphere of "everyone waiting together for a taste of tradition" is a warmth that cannot be bought in modern convenience stores.

Despite the changing times, seeing so many people on-site willing to spend time queuing proves that traditional customs still have a strong appeal in modern society.

We also saw the Mayor of Lukang and the Changhua County Magistrate on-site distributing Jian Dui, celebrating the Dragon Boat Festival with the public.

Perhaps we can consider holding a Jian Dui making experience at school, allowing students like us to become "makers" rather than just "receivers," and experience the traditional flavor of Lukang by making the batter with our own hands.
