II. What I Know About "Jian Dui" in Lukang
"Only by eating 'Jian Dui' can you truly say you've experienced the Dragon Boat Festival!" This is a daily routine for Lukang residents during the Dragon Boat Festival. Both are called Jian Dui, but in Hong Kong they're called sesame balls, while in Taiwan they're called 煎䭔 (Tainan) and 饘䬾 (Lukang). The character "饘" in Lukang's "饘䬾" (zhān tì) originally meant thick porridge! So, is "饘䬾" simply a type of pancake made from porridge? The origin of the Quanzhou Dragon Boat Festival's Jian Dui tradition stems from the southern plum rains of early May in the lunar calendar. Legend has it that when Nuwa Mends the Sky, a crack appeared, causing the rain to leak incessantly. Therefore, people use "Jian Dui" to Mends the Sky, as in the Hokkien folk song: "The rain is light, scoop up some oil and 'Jian Dui' it."
